Designed by Owen Spagler at SOFTlab, Crystal Cave is a 25 ft canopy of diacrylic panels that reflect and transform light and color with the world's best backdrop; the New York City Skyline. This installation is one of a kind as the light changes at every angle. There are a million possible views of the city from the same spot.
Permanent installation on the observation deck, completed June 2026. Crew of 4-12 working days and nights.
The structure is a packed cell geometry, a few hundred polyhedral cells, none of them the same shape. Parts arrived pre-cut. We assembled them with nuts, bolts and zip ties in the shop. The ceiling cluster got a perforated aluminum backing panel and LEDs.
